Smith on the Player Coach Relationship

Updated: Mar 10, 2020

Many seniors celebrate a milestone moment by signing their National Letter of Intent. It signals the end of a college recruiting process that was likely filled with many emotional twists and turns player’s college decision is unique, and there is no one-size-fits-all blueprint.Too many people look at it like a business transaction when it really should be more like a marriage. Looking at it like a business transaction will only lead to a lot of disappointment, and I think that is one reason you are seeing a lot of transfers. It is like a four-year scholarship has become a negotiation and everyone just wants to find the best deal they can get. But the best deal is where the best place for an athlete to grow is, and who is the person that is going to help them grow. The most important thing to consider is the relationship between the head coach and the player. If you have a strong relationship, that is going to help you overcome a lot of obstacles that are bound to come up.
